Wake Forest and Appalachian State both enjoyed a bye week and remain as the top two college football teams in North Carolina.

The rest of the top five is harder to figure out. Duke’s previous rout at Virginia Tech is still the deciding factor.

Here are updated rankings.

1. Wake Forest

Record: 5-0.

Why No. 1? Wake sits at 5-0 with three straight home games before traveling to Virginia Tech and Clemson for big-time matchups in November.

2. Appalachian State

Record: 4-0.

Why No. 2? App. State’s bye week came at a perfect time. It was after an emotional in-state victory over North Carolina and gave the team time to prepare for traveling Wednesday night to Louisiana, which is 4-1 overall and leading the Sun Belt West Division, while the Mountaineers are first in the Sun Belt East.

3. Duke

Record: 3-2.

Why No. 3? Duke drops some style points with its 33-30 loss to Pittsburgh in Durham. The Blue Devils trailed 26-3 during the third quarter before rallying to create a competitive final few minutes of the game.

4. North Carolina

Record: 3-3.

Why No. 4? The Tar Heels picked up a much-needed win, 38-22 at Georgia Tech, to stop a three-game losing streak. UNC hosts Duke on Oct. 26 in a game set to decide the No. 3 spot in these rankings.

5. N.C. State

Record: 3-2.

Why No. 5? The Wolfpack gets the Thursday night spotlight this week. N.C. State hosts Syracuse, which also will come in with a 3-2 record.
