The Daily Reflector

Monday, March 14, 2016

The Daily Reflector asked candidates in the March 15 primary to respond to surveys outlining their qualifications. Following are responses from the three Republican candidates running for Commissioner of Insurance. There is no Democratic primary for the seat.

MIKE CAUSEY

List a few highlights from your personal and professional life that you think best show you are qualified for the office you seek.

Four time Republican Party nominee for NC Commissioner of Insurance; first Republican to receive more than 1 million votes for insurance commissioner (1992) and first Republican to receive more than 2 million votes (2012). No Republican has ever been elected insurance commissioner in North Carolina. It’s been one-party since 1899. 2016 is the opportunity for North Carolina voters to get better results from their insurance department by electing Mike Causey.

As a legislative lobbyist focused on consumer rights, I guided bi-partisan passage of House Bill 13, the Consumer Motor Vehicle Repair Act, which was signed into law by the governor and gives consumers the Right to Choose their collision repair shop in auto body repairs after a motor vehicle accident. The problem is the current commissioner is not enforcing this law! I also am active in helping volunteers in North Carolina clean up litter along our roadsides that are way too trashy, under the Adopt-A-Highway, Sponsor-A-Highway and Swat-A-Litterbug programs. Litter and debris on our roads and roadsides can be a traffic hazard and raise insurance rates. I was born and raised in rural North Carolina and still live on the family farm in the Alamance Community of Southeast Guilford County.

The NC Department of Insurance will be a helpful service agency to the people. Consumers will have better insurance choices, better insurance rates and better service from the Department of Insurance and better service from insurance companies. I will restructuring the Rate Bureau from an outdated system to an efficient and effective tool. Consumers will have the right to choose their auto body shop to repair their damaged vehicle without interference from insurance companies or their representatives. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts will be used unless the vehicle owner wants non-original or aftermarket, generic parts. Safety and quality in collision repairs will be the top priority. Regulations and statutes will be enforced in a fair and even-handed manner.

As the only North Carolina native and lifelong farmer in this insurance primary, I am the most qualified by way of experience, background and achievements including: U.S. Army veteran; 25 years experience in the insurance business; legislative experience working with NC General Assembly as registered lobbyist; construction and engineering experience; former classroom teacher in public schools; manage the Adopt-A-Highway Program for the NC Department of Transportation; member of the Public Officers and Employee Liability Insurance Commission.

What started me off going down the path of learning about the insurance industry as a whole was Hurricane Katrina. In 2005, I went through Louisiana and onto Beaumont, Texas, to help do clean-up after the hurricane. What I saw and experienced there was incredible. Here you have people with their lives in turmoil and despair with roofs blown off, trees laid down across entire houses, with these people looking for a place to stay and can’t find one, and then the insurance companies trying everything possible to get out of paying for what they were legally responsible for paying. This, to me, was a wake-up call.

I came back to Charlotte and started a new construction company called Clear Choice Construction LLC and I started learning what was and what was not in the insurance policy and how it applied to the North Carolina Building Codes. Boy, did I get an education. I have heard just about every lie that there was as to why the insurance company adjusters would not do their insured “policy holders” correctly. My campaign is a direct result of an education that cannot be learned from any book or school.

I am only interested in bringing back the Department of Insurance into the hands of the citizens. This department was formed to supervise the insurance companies in this state. The insurance companies run this state to include the NCDOI. The current commissioner and his deputy commissioners are bought and paid for by the insurance companies. The revolving door between the insurance companies and the NCDOI is happening every day; all you have to do is look on Facebook and see where the current deputy commissioners comes from and then what happens to the deputy commissioners after they have changed the laws and policies in the insurance companies’ favor: They get a cushy job back at the insurance company. The insurance companies just do as they please in this state. If you or I send a complaint to the NCDOI, you or I get lip service and that’s it.

This is the platform I am running on. I will not stop my pursuit of the illegal activities at the NCDOI. I will accomplish this by whatever legal means possible. I am getting the word and my story out to where the press cannot stop me by ignoring me. I am running for this same office, and by the end of this month I will have placed a federal lawsuit against the NCDOI and five of the main deputy commissioners for incompetence of office (let alone the illegal things that they have done to me).
