Pitt County is set to send more than 25 swimmers to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships, led by a large contingent of D.H. Conley athletes who helped the Vikings win both the girls’ and boys’ divisions Saturday night at the 3-A Eastern Regional meet in Cary.

Conley dominated the meet, totaling 380 points in the boys’ standings and J.H. Rose took second place with 226. The DHC girls scored 373 for a 157-point margin of victory.

Several events saw Pitt County swimmers battle for medals, including the girls’ 50 freestyle with Svea Torres winning in 24.04 seconds and teammate Ruth McGee was second (25.25).

Conley’s Morgan Despres and Svea Torres each qualified for states in four events. Torres won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke (1:06.33).

The Vikings were first in five of the six relays.

The other Pitt County regional winners: Trevor Torres, Conley, 100 breaststroke, 1:00.16, 50 free, 21.95; Despres, 100 freestyle, 53.59.

South Central’s Bethany Tart took sixth place in the 100 freestyle in the 4-A regional on Friday night to earn a trip to states.
