No. 2 seed South Central dropped the first of a three-game series in the 4-A East Region softball final to the No. 8 seed Jack Britt Buccaneers, 7-3 on Wednesday.

The Falcons (25-2) must now travel to Fayetteville facing elimination at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Down 5-0, the hosts battled back to make it 5-3, but Jack Britt plated a pair of insurance runs to complete the win.

“We didn't start off very well and things went downhill from there,” SC head coach Cotton Nicholson said. “We made too many mistakes in the field, and we weren't sharp at the plate tonight. Hand it to them. They came to our place and took care of us. They deserved it, no doubt about it. We have to get sharper tomorrow and go out Friday and take care of business. Hopefully we come back Saturday and take another one.”

SC struggled offensively until the fifth inning, when the bats started to come alive. Down 5-0, Jessica Purcell hit a double to place a runner in scoring position immediately for the Falcons.

After battling at the plate, Holly Morrison reached via an error by Jack Britt third baseman Savannah Roddey. Carley Coleman entered the game for Morrison as a courtesy runner and promptly stole second base. Hanna Bailey then knocked an RBI single that scored Purcell to reduce the Buccaneer lead to four, 5-1.

A single by Marissa Roach then scored Bailey, followed by a Cam Davis RBI single to score Roach to make the score 5-3, but the was as close as the Falcons got.

“I told them, ‘Hey, it’s just one game. We got two more to play here. We’ll take care of business next time hopefully. Don’t get down on yourselves because we played good all year and this one game doesn't define us.’” Nicholson said of his postgame speech to his team.

Nicholson will rely heavily on team leaders Davis and Madison Deanes over the next few days to ensure his team is in the right mindset as they travel to Fayetteville on Friday.

Should the Falcons win Game Two, Game Three would be Saturday at 3 p.m. at South Central.
