Former East Carolina basketball great Blue Edwards is Greene Central High School’s new boys’ basketball coach, the school announced Friday.

Edwards is the only ECU player to have ever been selected in the first round of the NBA draft, going 21st overall to the Utah Jazz in 1989. His 773 points from the 1988-89 season are first in the ECU record book, and his career scoring average of 20.7 points per game ranks second.

“This is my alma mater and my home and a great opportunity to be around a great fan base,” Edwards said during an introductory news conference. “From what I understand the basketball team is very talented and very hungry, so I am looking forward to getting in and starting right away and to help shape these young men. I want to teach them a lot of things that I know and hopefully with these experiences that I have, they can benefit and learn from them and we can have great success on the basketball court.”

The Rams were the 2-A state runner-up last season, winning the East Finals over Clinton and then falling 63-59 to Forest Hills in the state title game in Chapel Hill. Charles Harris was their coach and he is taking over the boys’ basketball program at new school South Garner.
