Carter Rains represented J.H. Rose and Pitt County with a victory in the Down East Open over the weekend at New Bern’s Taberna County Club, shooting a tourney-best 66 and 68 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

It was part of a huge weekend in which Greenville and Pitt County natives swiped seven of the top 10 places in the tourney. Rains, however, was so dominant that he left second-place finishers (three-way tie) and fellow Greenville natives Blake Hess (75-68) and Cameron Hardison (73-70) by nine strokes. The event was part of the Tarheel Youth Golf Association tournament series.

Behind the leaders were Greenville locals Davis Fisher (fifth, 76-68), David Langley (T-sixth, 73-72) and Kris Jackson (T-eighth, 77-70). Grimesland native Andrew Gallagher (73-74) also finished tied for eighth.

It’s difficult to win the first 11 games of your season consecutively, and it shows the mark of a true contender for a state title.

Try having not one, but two of those in the same conference. Add another that at 9-3, continually fights for its chance at a conference and state title. Add…
