J.H. Rose senior golfer Carter Rains dominated the field, finishing nine strokes ahead of the competition late last month with a first-overall finish on Aug. 26 at Taberna Country Club in New Bern, part of a Tarheel Youth Golf Association tournament.

Rains fired a tournament-low 66 on Saturday and a 68 on Sunday.

“It feels good to just put together two good scores on the weekend,” Rains said recently of his tournament win. “I went in feeling good about the course. The greens were slow and really soft, so they didn't have a lot of break.”

Rains was one of several Greenville based competitors. Fellow Rose teammate Davis Fisher, who finished fifth shooting 76 and 68, was in attendance along with other Greenville natives Blake Hess (75-68), Cameron Hardison (73-70), David Langley (73-72) and Khris Jackson (T-77-70), all of whom finished in the top 10.

The conditions of the course gave Rains the mindset of going very low on his scorecard.

“I had a three-shot lead heading into Day 2,” Rains said. “I just never took my foot off the gas. I was 1 over after the first nine on the second day, then I birdied 10 and 11 and even eagled 13.”

Despite his big lead, Rains never thought to loosen his grip on the lead.

“It may not have been as competitive or stressful as other events where if I bogey a hole the guy behind me will be right there to compete, but I never felt it was in the bag until I finished the 16th hole,” Rains said.

The victory was another stepping stone toward high school golf season, which begins early next year. Until that time arrives, Rains said he will continue to play in sporadic weekend tournaments to stay sharp, as well as visiting the driving range when time permits.

He is confident about the possibility of the Rampants’ golf team advancing to postseason play.

“I feel really confident about the team this year,” he said. “I know that first semester is really long, and especially February. Overall, the team is really coming together. At any time, we have five guys who can play at or under par. I’m really excited to win another conference championship and going to states.”
