Pitt County had a strong showing at the NCHSAA 3-A girls’ tennis regional at N.C. Wesleyan College this weekend, highlighted by a J.H. Rose tandem taking top honors in doubles action.

Maryah Stokes and Ginger Evans won the regional championship.

After cruising to a two-set semifinal win, the Rampants’ top doubles team was locked in a battle with Kathryn Thompson and Frances Coleman from New Hanover in the finals. Stokes and Evans dropped the first set 6-1, but they rebounded and won first place in a 1-6, 7-6 (8), 7-5 victory.

They will look to carry their momentum into the state tournament to be held Friday and Saturday in Burlington.

D.H. Conley’s Madison Cullipher finished second in the regional in the singles bracket.

She beat Topsail’s Kylee Edwards, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in the semifinals. Mary Davis Thompson from New Hanover then won the finals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The Greene Central Rams looked to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the season against undefeated Kinston, and nearly did. In the end, however, one key play ended any thought of knocking off the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference leader.

Looking at a first-and-goal from the 10-yard line, it seemed…
