D.H. Conley posted a sweep in its first swim meet back from winter break, scoring 225 points in the girls’ standings and 220 in the boys in a meet featuring New Bern, West Carteret and Croatan as the Vikings’ closest competitors.

Conley girls who won in relay events included Meredith Bullard, Abigail Burns, Brooke Despres, Ruth McGee, Faith Koesters and Lexi Blatt.

The Vikings took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle event, with Bullard (2:14.13) touching first and Jarianna Vasquez-Soto second. Another DHC top-two finish happened in the 100 breaststroke after a win by Despres in 1:18.02 and Koesters was second.

More individual winners were Burns in the 200 IM (2:18.49), McGee in the 100 free (57.49) and Despres in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.02).

The DHC boys posted six individual victories. 

Trevor Torres and Garrett Despres each won two individual events. Torres thrived in the freestyle, winning the 50 in 22.60 and the 100 in 48.18. Despres won the 500 free (5:06.09) and his victory in the 200 IM in 2:09.27 was followed by teammate Riley Brown in second at 2:11.27.

Conley’s other individual winners were Conner Dennison (200 free, 1:55.77) and Seth Tillery (100 butterfly, 56.99). Turner Cook, Jacob Bell and Brown swam in relay wins.

Basketball

D.H. Conley won two close basketball games at New Bern earlier this week, taking the boys’ game 44-41 and the girls won 39-38 in the buildup to Friday night’s matchup at rival J.H. Rose.

A thrilling one-point victory kept the DHC girls (9-1, 3-0) unbeaten in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference. Jenna Wooten had a stellar game with 18 points and seven rebounds.

South Central’s girls also are 3-0 in the ECC.

The Conley boys (6-6, 1-2) got a boost from Kent Gilbert, who scored 14 points. CJ Johnson and Jahmois Barnhill each had 11.

Middle schools

Hope boys 53, PS Jones 30

Hope stayed undefeated, improving its record to 7-0 with a win over PS Jones that was led by Jamir Wright and his 16 points. 

Khalil Thames and Cooper Marcum had 10 points each. Jalyn Lampkins scored nine for PS Jones.

Hope girls 46, PS Jones 35

The Hope girls’ team also remained unbeaten for the season. Kylah Silver led the way with 18 points, and Karma May had 10.

Wellcome girls 51, Bethel 20

Wellcome defeated Bethel in girls’ basketball, dropping Bethel to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play.  

Bethel was led by Abbi Everette, who had eight points.
