Swimmers from J.H. Rose and D.H. Conley advanced to the state championship meet after plenty of Pitt County success at the 3-A East Regional competition Saturday in Cary.

Conley dominated for the second straight year in both the girls’ and boys’ regional standings, winning the boys’ meet with 353.3 points and the girls also were first with 367. The Rose girls’ team (325.5) finished in second place, and the Rose boys (164) were fourth.

In the 4-A regionals, South Central’s Bethany Tart sped to a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 52.91 seconds, and she was third in the 100 free.

Conley’s Trevor Torres had a strong showing, picking up wins and valuable points in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle swims.

The team of Torres, Garrett Despres, Riley Brown and Turner Cook also won the 200 medley relay. DHC diver Kaitlyn Glynn totaled 283.40 points and defeated her lone opponent, Rose’s Lillian Ozimek, in the 1-meter diving competition.

Other DHC winners included Abigail Burns, Meredith Bullard, Brooke Despres and Ruth McGee (200 free relay), and the team of Jacob Bell, Garrett Despres, Connor Dennison and Torres (400 free relay).

Rose came out firing in the girls’ 200 medley relay, as Madeline Smith, Emma Hastings, Lily Grace Blackmon and Corry Eason finished first in 1:54.69. Their Conley counterparts, consisting of Bullard, Burns, Brooke Despres and McGee, were second.

Other Rose winners included Hastings (200 IM, 500 freestyle) and Smith (100 free), and Eleanor Blount, Hastings, Grace McCarthy and Smith in the 400 freestyle relay.

Before D.H. Conley’s boys’ basketball team extended its win streak to four games and recorded a key Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference victory versus C.B. Aycock on Friday night, the Conley girls routed Aycock 65-18.

Jenna Wooten led the way with 16 points, followed by Alisha Anderson with 12 and 11 from Kiara Johnson.
