Ayden-Grifton trailed by just six points, 37-31, at the half Tuesday night against Kinston, but a slow start to the second half sank the Chargers, as the Vikings pulled away to win in Littlefield, 95-56.

ECU Men’s basketball coach Joe Dooley was on hand to take in the game before the Pirates take on Wichita State tonight in Minges Coliseum.

A-G (8-12, 4-5) quietly kept Kinston (16-6, 7-2) within reach in the first quarter, distributing the ball well and holding the score to 19-17 in favor of the Vikings. They even briefly took the lead early in the second quarter, taking a 28-25 advantage early, but a 12-3 run to end the quarter once again placed the Vikings ahead, 37-31.

Chargers head coach John Moye said the difference in play between the halves stemmed from a breakdown in the game plan.

“We stopped playing defense (in the second half),” Moye said. “Offensively, we turned the ball over, which costed us the chance to keep it close.”

Defense was the name of the game going into the contest for A-G, as Jordan Atkinson (22 points) and the rest of the Chargers ran a stellar 3-2 defense, creating bad shots for their opponents and bringing down rebounds.

The second-half onslaught of Issac Parson (11 points), Dontrez Styles (21 points) and Judah McBynum (16 points) was just too much for A-G.

Atkinson led the way on both ends but was the only player able to generate consistent offense throughout the game. Atkinson, Moses Tuft (10 points) and James Richardson (10 points) had double-digit point totals for the Chargers.

The Vikings outscored A-G 22-11 in the third quarter, and 34-18 in the fourth, which sealed another win and a season sweep over the Chargers.

A-G has four games left in the regular season, which will continue Friday when the Chargers travel to take on North Lenoir.

The Chargers offense struggled throughout the game, seeing only 10 points on the scoreboard at the half.

Cedaria Little led the way with seven points. Zy’keriah Andrews finished with six.
