Ayden-Grifton senior Blake McLawhorn has held several titles in his high school athletic career, with quarterback and third baseman being the most prominent. Preps beat writer Jake Keator spoke with McLawhorn about his time as a Charger and the skills he has learned.

Q: Playing third base entails a lot of action. What is it like playing “the hot corner?”

A: “I’m just out there trying to do my best, trying to get some outs for the team. I just want to get back to the plate and get some runs.”

Q: Does the experience you have as a senior help keep you focused at the plate?

A: “Yes it does. I’m just out there trying not to strike out. I just try to do whatever I can to avoid hurting the team.”

Q: Do any of the skills you have playing QB transfer to the diamond or vise versa?

A: “I can see the ball really well. I can look for receivers and see them pretty well out on offense.”

Q: You’re coming to the end if your career as a Charger. Will there be any moments that stand out in your head?

A: “Sophomore year, going to the third round with the baseball team. That was really memorable.”

Q: What is it like being able to play alongside this team for one more season?

A: “I’m just happy to be able to call them my brothers on this team.”

Q: If you could give some advice to a younger athlete what would it be?

A: “Just keep playing. Don’t let stuff get into your head, and just do you.”
