It wasn’t just another signing day at Greene Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Along with Dylan Benton and Brandon Gilbert committing to play college sports, the Rams also appointed Jason Wilson as their new head football coach.

Benton will play baseball at Louisburg College, while Gilbert will play football at Barton. Both of them helped their respective teams make it to the 2-A state playoffs this past season.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Benton said. “Louisburg seemed like the best option for me and it gave me a good chance to play a lot. I considered some other places, but I feel like they were the right fit for my family and I.”

Former Greene Central head coach Allen Wooten became the new football coach at Havelock in April. He left a Rams team that he led to the playoffs in all six years of his tenure.

Now Wilson, who played college football at N.C. A&T and is also the Rams’ head track and field coach, will take over the Rams football team. The decision to hire him seemed to be a popular choice.

“I feel like I blend in with the community,” Wilson said. “I’ve been here for two years and I know this is a hardworking community. It just feels right for me to be here and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Wilson was the defensive backs coach and the head coach of the Rams JV football team this past season. His team had a 5-4 overall record while the varsity team went 6-6 and lost in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs.

Gilbert, who will play outside linebacker on the first-ever Barton football team, did his part to help the Rams be successful last season.

“It’s overwhelming,” Gilbert said. “I’m excited to be a part of Barton’s football program. They emphasized how they want good athletes and even better students. Making history as a part of the first Barton football recruiting class is really exciting.”

Greene Central Athletic Director David Bryant certainly approved of the decision to hire coach Wilson, and although there were many good choices, he opted for someone who knows the Rams inside and out.

“We were looking for the best option for us,” Bryant said of the hire. “That’s why we decided on naming Jason our head coach. He relates well to the kids and he’s a great motivator that represents our school very well. It’s been a great sports year for our class of 2019 and their hard work has paid off in a big way.”

Wilson and the Rams football team have already begun spring practice in preparation for the 2019 season.
