A highlight of the summer is the American Legion season. Twice a summer, Pitt Post 39 and Farmville Post 151 meet and play for standing in the Area I division. The two tried to play Wednesday night at Pitt Community College, but rain once again forced a delay to the game, which will be made up tonight. Preps beat writer Jake Keator spoke with Post 39 head coach Ryan Meadows and Post 151 coach Josh Boberg about their teams. Answers will be marked JB for Boberg and RM for Meadows.

Q: Post 151 is a new team to the area. What has it been like getting this team off the ground?

JB: “It’s been amazing. I haven’t shifted the goal since I had the idea in 2015, I want to give guys who are passionate about baseball and want to give it their all the opportunity to play on a team. I owe a huge debt to the guys on the ’16, ’17 and 2018 teams. They were all great guys and I was just grabbing anyone who wanted to come out and play for, what was essentially, an expansion team.”

Q: Who is a player on your roster who has stood out early in the season?

RM: “Between the weather and the three schools being represented on this roster we really haven’t had a chance to build continuity. We knew what we were getting out of all of our players and their talent, but so far we haven’t been able to really see who will stand out.”

JB: “Zach Nicholson from D.H. Conley has been hitting the ball really well. We played Wayne County’s Post 11 early in the year in a fundraiser double header, he hit grand slams in both of those games. We played another double header later on and hit another two home runs. He’s been seeing the ball really well.”

Q: What is like when you have to switch from coaching high schools to legion ball?

RM: “Our legion season starts well before our first game. We’re in constant contact with the guys pretty much all year. We take pride in making relationships with our guys, not just coaching them for 20 or 30 games and letting them go. The baseball side of it takes care of itself. Coach (Corey) Skinner and I are huge Pitt County baseball fans, not just Ayden-Grifton, not just North Pitt. We’re really blessed to be in the fraternity of Pitt County baseball coaches.”

Q: What are your hopes for the remainder of the season?

JB: “Once all of the graduation ceremonies are over with this weekend I’m hoping that we can get all of our guys out on the field. We haven’t been able to play all together yet, but once it’s all over we’ll be at full strength.”
