Lauren Wiles stepped into the role as the go-to pitcher for D.H. Conley this season. The sophomore hurler posted a 14-2 record, finishing with a 1.27 ERA. Her efforts earned her the title of Pitcher of the Year on The Daily Reflector’s annual All-Area softball team.
“It was great being the go-to pitcher this year,” Wiles said. “It was a great experience being able to get in the spotlight and be a part of those big-time games. My team knew I had their backs and we were able to accomplish so much this season.”
Wiles had five shutouts on the year. She pitched 99 innings, racking up 155 strikeouts while walking only 46 batters. It was a tall task for any hitter to make contact off her, as she ended the season with just 43 hits allowed, giving opposing batters a .125 batting average.
An N.C. State verbal commit, Wiles has kept an eye on the changing of the coaching staff for the Wolfpack. She committed under former coach Shawn Rychick, who did not return after six seasons with the program. Jennifer Patrick-Swift led NCSU this season.
“I committed under the old coaches,” Wiles said. “I actually haven’t been able to meet or talk to the new coaching staff yet. I’ve been to a couple camps with them, but I ‘m looking forward to getting to know them during September when I’m allowed to speak with them.”
Although Conley graduated 13 seniors this season, Wiles is eager to return to the field and take full control of the team.
“I’m ready for me and the rest of the underclassmen to get out there and do well,” Wiles said. “We’re ready to get out there and prove we’re still strong even though we graduated 13 seniors.”
