After recently seeing his D.H. Conley athletic career come to a close Shea Ward continues to improve his game on the diamond. The Pitt Community College commit is playing with the Post 39 Legion team this summer before joining the Bulldogs. Preps beat writer Jake Keator spoke with Ward about his game, his time at Conley and the future.
Q: Looking back on your career at Conley how do you feel about how it ended?
A: "It was amazing, we really became like a family. We'd go out to eat after games together, and having that many guys in one place is a lot. We really became close over the season."
Q: What did you learn during your time playing high school ball?
A: "I learned that the game gets a little faster at every step. It's a grind to play through that schedule, and it's going to be even more of a grind in college."
Q: What will be your favorite memory of Conley?
A: "Even though it was a loss I have to saw that New Hanover series. The atmosphere at every game was just insane."
Q: What is it like playing legion baseball in the summer? How important is that for you?
A: "Post 39 was the best fit or me and what I wanted to accomplish. Coach (Ryan) Meadows told us we're playing a college like schedule with 16 games in 15 days, so really it's almost like a major league schedule. It's fun to play against high tier competition."
Q: What made you choose PCC, and where do you expect to be placed on the field?
A: "I want to play Division I ball, and I know coach Eason and the rest of the coaching staff have put out a lot of D-1 players. It was a great fit for me. I expect to be in the middle infield or in the outfield.
Q: What advice would you give a younger athlete?
A: "I'd tell them it's important to fall in love with the weight room and their sport early. In order to be successful you have to work hard, you have to spend a lot of time in the gym and in the weight room."
