After spending last season at quarterback, junior Tavyon Suggs will make the transition to running back for the upcoming season under new head coach Eddie Rhodes. Preps beat writer Jake Keator spoke with Suggs about the move to running back, playing at Farmville and what practices have been like under Rhodes.

Q: When did you learn that you would be moving to running back? What was your reaction?

A: "I was happy about it. If we were doing more passing and running the ball a little differently then I would want to be a quarterback, but right now we're mostly handing the ball off, so I want to become a running back.

Q: You had a couple of really big plays last season, is there a moment from last year that stands out?

A: "I don't remember what team we were playing, but it was the first play and I threw a 52-yard to Je'sean Sutton for a touchdown."

Q: When and how did you learn about coach (Scott) Gardner stepping down? What was your reaction?

A: "He had told us a few times throughout the season that he wasn't sure if he was going to coach next season or not. I really liked coach Gardner, but I also already knew coach Rhodes before he was hired. I kind of wanted coach to stay, but it was cool to already know the next coach that was coming in."

Q: What have practices been like under coach Rhodes? What are some of the differences?

A: "We're running a new offense this year, so we've been doing a lot more running and conditioning so far. I'm adapting to it and getting used to all the new pieces."

Q: What are your feelings about the upcoming season? Do you think this team will improve?

A: "I'm just working to try and get some more college offers. I have talked with ECU before along with some other schools. I'm just trying to get better as a team player and pick up some more offers to figure out where I want to go."

Q: What advice would you give others who want to become a stellar running back?

A: "I'd tell them to keep working on their footwork. Just keep working hard, because the harder you work at everything you do the better you'll be. Play against better competition or find the best person on the field and go after them. Just work hard and try your best at everything you do."

No matter who you ask, most coaches, no matter the sport, will tell you that preseason predictions mean nothing in reference to the game itself, and I agree.

However, the idea of making early guesses as to who will still be playing for something come time for the playoffs is not only entertaining,…

A preseason poll is, in essence, a shot in the dark.

Coaches vote for who they believe will claim a conference title at the end of this football season, with little information outside of what they know of their own squad.

Regardless, a preseason poll creates a fun and exciting benchmark as the…
