Despite falling behind and facing a sweep, the Farmville Central varsity volleyball team won the final three sets to take down North Johnston 3-2 (24-26, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-9) on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Lady Jaguars improved to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference while North Johnston fell to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in conference.
"We know we can always come back because we've done it multiple times before," FC junior Caroline Callihan said.
Lady Jaguar head coach Alyssa Pitt said she was frustrated with the lack of energy her team played with in the first two sets, but the script began to change in the middle of the third set. The Jaguars trailed 7-1 early in the set, but scored eight straight points to take the lead, 8-7.
"We can't expect other people to play well if you aren't playing well yourself," Alyssa Pitt said. "We've just been trying to brush off bad sets. Just like if you mess up your eyeliner; you just have to wipe it off and redo it."
Junior Lauryn Pitt recorded five blocks in the third set, helping the Jaguars control the net and earn the set victory. From there, Pitt dictated the night, recording eight of her 20 kills in a fourth set that the Lady Jaguars trailed in only once. She also contributed 23 digs, filling holes in the final three sets that went uncovered earlier in the night.
North Johnston opened the fifth set with two aces from junior Gabby Hales, but errors plagued the Panthers in the set. Pitt added an ace and a kill while Callihan ended the match with her fifth kill.
Riley Nicol led the Panthers’ attack with 13 kills.
Farmville Central will now prepare to face first-place SouthWest Edgecombe on Thursday. In the their first matchup of the season, the Jaguars fell to the Cougars 3-2. SouthWest Edgecombe was 14-1 and 6-0 in conference prior to Tuesday's action against Nash Central.
"As long as we keep being excited and aggressive, I think we will play well against them," Alyssa Pitt said.
