Letter: Life imitates classic TV

You can’t make this up!

This morning I watched an episode of the old western TV series, “Trackdown,” on Me-TV.

In it, a charlatan convinced gullible citizens that a massive meteor shower was going to destroy them unless they purchased his special umbrellas to protect them from disaster.

“Only I can protect you!” he shouted at one point.

His name: "Trump!"

Of course, it was only TV. Our hero exposed the crook and saved the town. Unfortunately, there is no hero to protect us from our own Trump and his gullible followers.

Oh yes, the TV episode was entitled "The End of the World."

Two of the most liberal papers in our country, The New York Times and The Washington Post are frequently used by The Daily Reflector to provide replacement editorials. The DR also uses many of their columnists spewing forth their hate. However, one of the Washington Post’s contributing…

With all the media following the illegal immigration/child separation problem, I find it unbelievable how not only the media are exploiting this "story" but the politicians as well.  You see, here in the USA we have children who are wrongly separated from their parents by the Department of…

During a recent visit to Greenville for an economic roundtable, Sen. Thom Tillis expressed misgivings about the N.C. Legislature’s decision to do away with the incentives program for the film industry five years ago, calling it a mistake.

I worked in and around the industry in Wilmington (as…

I was lucky enough to have been born in the United States and have lived here my entire life. During most of those years, I have proudly said, I am an American. There were two periods when I couldn't make that statement: during the Abu Ghraib incident in the Iraq war where our U.S. military and the…

Broad, vegetated floodplains of Coastal Plain streams provide three crucial functions: 1) they provide increased water flow capacity; 2) vegetation is a sponge that utilizes water and lowers the ground-water level, increasing water storage capacity within the drainage system; and 3) a vegetated…

Spike Lee said “do the right thing,” but often kids don’t. They get in trouble. It happens when their self-actualization interests intersect with the rules in families and schools and laws in society.

The key is when a child makes a bad choice, there’s a responsible adult to…

It seems that both the vice president and the attorney general have misread the Bible when they use it to support President Trump's policy of taking children away from parents of immigrant parents as they reach the U.S. border.

Mathew 19:14 (KJV) reads, "And Jesus said, Suffer little children, and…

“What would [a coherent national policy that take’s the country’s war’s seriously] look like? It would probably look like rescinding the open-ended Authorization for the Use of Military Force and making the president regularly go before Congress to explain where and why he…

There is no other way to describe the behavior of the Republicans who totally control the N.C. Legislature and whose leadership assembled a small group of Republicans to craft the 2018-19 state budget in secret and to package said budget in such a manner that circumnavigated entirely…
