Letter: Legitimate, bipartisan concerns

Loading…

Friday, February 17, 2017

John R. Cleary’s letter to the editor on Feb. 11 says that Democrats need to ‘get over it’ and accept the new Republican administration. But, there are some issues of concern that cross party lines.

I don’t think it’s whiney to ask that a law be passed to require the Treasury to release the president’s tax returns. It’s not being a ‘poor sport’ to ask for an independent commission to investigate Russian meddling in the U.S. election.

These are legitimate concerns that I hope both Republicans and Democrats share. I love America and I care deeply about it. It’s our job as citizens to be engaged in the democratic process and to actively question things that don’t seem right.

In a recent letter, David Rushing claims that I erred (1) in writing that the arms protected in the Second Amendment are arms available at the time of the amendment’s adoption, and (2) in writing that the Bill of Rights contains no preamble.

First, in the 10 years since Heller, the Supreme…

I noted in Sunday’s Daily Reflector that Rev. Bob Hudak is retiring as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. I am glad he will enjoy a respite from his pastoral duties and know he will remain active in the eastern Carolina community he lives in.

Although we in the Coalition…

While the argument over the 2nd Amendment carries on in the DR, some of our sclerotic legislators introduced a two-page piece of legislation Thursday, HB 965, that is a direct affront to both the U.S. Constitution and the Bible. Should this bill pass, both public school and charter school students…

In reference to the column by Walter Williams talking about Kanye West being a problem for the Democratic Party, I admire Kanye West for standing tall and speaking his heart. I don't think most people, if polled, would agree that they like change.

If your friends told you that you could do certain…

So the Democratic arm, the N.C. Association of Educators, wants to return to the glory days of Gov. Bev Perdue. Someone close to me taught during the Perdue administration. It was four years without a pay increase. Perdue actually broke the state contract with the teachers and withheld part of…

I am shocked and ashamed that our government supports the current murderous regime of Israel. I don't understand how we, as American citizens, can stand by and calmly observe the unwarranted murder of more than 50 Palestinians and the wounding and maiming of hundreds more by the Israeli…

Entering hurricane season, I recall Irene (which hit Pitt County in August 2011).

At that time, I was discussing with Mrs. LaRue Evans, a cousin and historian of Winterville, about putting my homeplace on the national historic registry because of its architecture

This home was built in the 20th…

Cokie and Steve Roberts’ column in The Daily Reflector on May 10 begs the question: Why have a House chaplain at all? If there is currently so much controversy between Catholics and Protestants, who share a belief in the same god, how much worse is it going to get as the U.S. (and likely the…

Any honest, fair-minded, law-abiding citizen who attended the April 23 Pitt County Board of Commissioners meeting that considered a re-zoning request by Bill Clark Homes has to have anger still punching his/her gut along with frustration.

An overflow crowd of thoughtful citizens of Moss Bend, Holly…

A few weeks ago I wrote to correct Tinsley Yarbrough’s claim that the Supreme Court in its Heller decision limited the Second Amendment to protecting only the arms available at the time of the adoption of the Constitution. In that letter I also suggested accuracy is important with issues as…
