Love America, fight fascism

This listing of the early warning signs of fascism is from a poster that was once for sale in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum:

Powerful and continuing nationalism; disdain for human rights; identification of enemies as a unifying cause; supremacy of the military; rampant sexism; controlled mass media obsession with national security; religion and government intertwined; corporate power protected; labor power suppressed; disdain for intellectuals and the arts; obsession with crime and punishment; rampant cronyism and corruption; fraudulent elections.

Does this sound alarmingly familiar? Is it possible that the United States of America is turning toward fascist ideology and away from democracy? Yes! Not only possible, but actual! Donald Trump and the pushover, right wing ideologists in Congress, supported by a mass of paranoid, deluded voters are taking us down this totalitarian trail.

Our only recourse for maintaining the democratic form of government we desire is to exercise those freedoms we still have, while we still have them. We’ve got to oppose this current, corrupt administration with our voices and our votes. We’re not Nazis! We’re not fascists! Peaceful protest is needed now as much as it ever was. As is pointed out in a recent book title, the second through fifth letters of Revolution, looked at in a mirror, spell “love.” If we love our country we must act now.

In a recent letter to the Daily Reflector, pharmacologist Ken Soderstrom cited the 2015 Friedman case to bolster his view that Justice Scalia would have extended Second Amendment protection to semiautomatic rifles.

In Friedman, the Supreme Court refused to review a federal appeals court decision…

As a county commissioner, I take the safety of our community very seriously. Having a tough, trusted, and fair district attorney is extremely important in keeping our citizens safe. I didn’t arrive at that conclusion from being a politician. That belief comes from the experience gathered as…

As a judge I worked with Lee Allen while he prosecuted criminal cases in the Superior Court. Without reservation I fully endorse Lee for district attorney for Pitt County.

Lee Allen is the right man for this very powerful and important position. Lee was hired by Tom Haigwood in the mid-1990s. Until…

I strongly support Lee Allen for district attorney in the coming election. Lee is a military veteran and is active with veterans groups. He has past experience with the District Attorney’s Office, and with his experience, character and excellent leadership, I think Lee is the best candidate…

We are writing to offer our wholehearted support for Lee Allen, the Republican candidate for Pitt County District Attorney.

We have known Lee Allen for the past five years, and as a man, Lee holds strong family values and a world view that mirrors that of most of the constituents in Pitt County. As…

Rose Glover has been a Greenville institution for two decades while serving as District 2’s city councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tempore. Not a day goes by wherein she isn’t personally engaged in her community, fighting for the concerns of her district’s constituents. I regularly visit…
