Love America, fight fascism

This listing of the early warning signs of fascism is from a poster that was once for sale in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum:

Powerful and continuing nationalism; disdain for human rights; identification of enemies as a unifying cause; supremacy of the military; rampant sexism; controlled mass media obsession with national security; religion and government intertwined; corporate power protected; labor power suppressed; disdain for intellectuals and the arts; obsession with crime and punishment; rampant cronyism and corruption; fraudulent elections.

Does this sound alarmingly familiar? Is it possible that the United States of America is turning toward fascist ideology and away from democracy? Yes! Not only possible, but actual! Donald Trump and the pushover, right wing ideologists in Congress, supported by a mass of paranoid, deluded voters are taking us down this totalitarian trail.

Our only recourse for maintaining the democratic form of government we desire is to exercise those freedoms we still have, while we still have them. We’ve got to oppose this current, corrupt administration with our voices and our votes. We’re not Nazis! We’re not fascists! Peaceful protest is needed now as much as it ever was. As is pointed out in a recent book title, the second through fifth letters of Revolution, looked at in a mirror, spell “love.” If we love our country we must act now.

Brett Kavanaugh is the wrong choice to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court. If he is confirmed to the Supreme Court, everything that we hold dear as a nation will be at stake.

From a protecting a woman’s right to choose to dismantling the Affordable Care Act, Kavanaugh could…

The recent article about State Treasurer Dale Folwell and the ECU Physicians-Vidant Health merger perplexes me.

I’m not a health care professional, business executive or attorney— just a North Carolina taxpayer. So maybe I’m dense or ill informed. But why did the article say…

A president under investigation for colluding with a foreign power (and known enemy of the United States) should not be allowed to appoint Supreme Court justices.

When that president picks a nominee who has stated that sitting president should not be subject to indictment nor subjected to civil…

From time to time the idea of a pedestrian bridge across the Tar River to River Park North is mentioned. For example, a Reflector article in 2016 estimated the price of such a bridge at $7 million-$20 million dollars! That price tag scares many citizens off. That's a shame because River Park North…

I have a theory that a couple of the daily Bless Your Heart contributors are the same Looney Tunes that respond on reflector.com. I can’t be sure because they hide under anonymity. For example is the BYH that there was no federal law that required or suggested family separation before…

There is a lot of misinformation regarding single-payer health plans, and Albert Hunt’s column in the Sunday Daily Reflector did nothing to clear the air. His remarks regarding the health care system were both inaccurate and off the mark. Hunt referred to the proposed single-payer system as…

Amid the headlines of migrant children being separated from their parents and guardians, there is the stark reality of human beings wrenched from each other. When it is your neighbor, co-worker, or fellow church member, then it becomes “up close and personal.” Maybe that’s…

I just saw Walter B. Jones’ Facebook post congratulating himself for participating in Kinston's naturalization ceremony. He was very quick to stress how proud he was of people going "through the legal process" of becoming a citizen.

So my question for him, and for my other representatives:…

Do you think the Capital Gazette whose publishers ranted and raved about their dedication to the public should have realized that alleged mass murderer Jarrod Ramos was mentally unstable to say the least?

They should have called the first available psychologist or psychiatrist to assist them, or at…

Why is it when Dewey Funkhouser writes in the DR, he can’t get his point across without attacking Christians. Doesn’t matter what subject he comments on, it’s always the Christians’ fault.

He tries, with little success, to compare what President Trump does with illegal…
