Murphy fails Pitt County

Rep. Greg Murphy failed to represent the best interests of Pitt County in the current state budget process. ECU is facing a targeted cut of $1.1 million in the revised 2018-2019 budget. This is the largest cut of any of the UNC system institutions.

In contrast, UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State are receiving a combined $18 million in increased state funding. Even aid to private institutions is being increased by over $3.5 million. Rep. Murphy blindly accepted the explanation given to him by the party leadership without further investigation.

It appears as though he even failed to contact ECU to find out the impact of a $1.1 million cut on the institution and the students it serves. This is not effective representation for Pitt County.

Twelve Chicagoans were shot dead and 62 others were shot and wounded Aug. 3-5, the Chicago Tribune reported (https://tinyurl.com/yde7jb83). Before last week's mayhem, 1,718 Chicagoans had been shot since the beginning of the year, and 306 had been murdered.

Adding to this tragedy is the fact that…

As we watch the very unfortunate issue unfold in the town of Bethel involving the tenants living in Whitehurst Trailer Park, one does not have to be a rocket scientist to see that these wonderful citizens have been thrown under the bus and forgotten by the town’s government.

What do Bethel…

With scorching heat and raging wildfires in the West and torrential downpours and massive flooding in the East, global warming is not just about a gentle sea rise any more. These tragic consequences of dumping greenhouse gases into our atmosphere call for drastic remedies.

For starters, we should…

The editorial “Pence would restore democracy, irk Democrats” is just another example of the globalists trying to subvert the will of the American People. The line, “a Pence presidency sometime in the coming year is more likely than not,” is absolute establishment fantasy and…

The “ECU Parking Woes” article in The Daily Reflector on Aug. 7 needs a response.

Everyone who either attends classes or is employed at the ECU main campus is well aware of the dire parking problem. The university has reacted to this dilemma by building parking garages (at very…

I left “Dixie” at age 12 and I still remember the hard-packed red clay school playgrounds. If you’ve been receiving Social Security for a few years, you’ll probably recall some of the popular games during recess:

Kick ball, dodge ball, roll at the bat, mumbley peg (yes, some…

Our president exaggerates frequently, having made 4,229 false or misleading statements to date, reports The Washington Post. This statistic is immediately dismissed by millions of our citizens as “fake, fake, disgusting, news,” as the president recently said in Pennsylvania, where…

On July 12 the Pitt County Board of Elections met to decide on an early voting schedule. Public comments were allowed at the beginning of the meeting, with one opportunity to comment. Citizens were not allowed input after that. My concerns are about Sunday voting. Statistics prove civic-minded Pitt…

Finally, in 1965, the United States Supreme Court struck down all the so-called "Jim Crow" laws that had been mandating segregation in our former Confederate states. Now, just recently, the Israeli legislature (by a vote of 62-55-2) has enacted a statute that comprises a carbon copy of our former…
