Republicanism modern-day mammon

I just could not let the recent back-to-back letters using Christ and God references in support of Kavanaugh and the Republicans slide by.

As for Kavanaugh, he flatly stated that the devil's triangle he referred to is a drinking game. It is not, it is a three-way sex act. He said that boofing was farting, when it is actually ingesting alcohol or other substances rectally for a better buzz (you read that right), otherwise he expects us to believe he was asking in his yearbook "Have you farted yet?” That would not make any sense.  He lied about being of legal drinking age those early years. What else did he about lie?

Being a Christ follower, those letters deserved a rebuttal for Trump and the Republicans who support him, who are all about lowering their taxes so they can hoard more wealth, which betrays the Christ teachings: "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's," not to mention "Store up your riches which are in Heaven," "Woe be unto the rich, for they already have their reward," "It will be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into Heaven," "To whom much is given, much shall be required," "What ye do unto these, the least of my brethren, ye do unto me," and of course, "You cannot serve God and mammon" (wealth).

The only thing they seem to serve is mammon, in fact our president* is mammon incarnate.

Republican ideology betrays Christ's teachings so much, you could say it is “antichrist” in the most neutral sense of that word.

I urge Rep. G.K. Butterfield to vote no on bill H53/S52. This bill has already been presented to the legislature (H575) in 2017. It was not passed then and should not be passed now. It is obviously a method to curtail the rights of people to their reproductive health.

Reps. McElraft, Turner and…

Well folks I was going to focus my writing on just art matters. However, after listening again to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s street sweeper speech I’m inclined to combine the two.

Firstly if you have never heard it, just search MLK street sweeper and be prepared to be uplifted and…

I read with interest Ralph Tyson’s letter (Republicanism betrays the people, Feb. 7). He stresses “We the People.” Correct, and we the people elected Donald Trump — get over it!

He goes on to say Republicans are not constitutionalists — why don’t you…

Just a few short years ago our community came together to help fund the addition of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Vidant Hospital due to the large number of low birth weight babies being born in our region. This state-of-the-art facility helps these tiny persons in their struggle for life…

As I visit metropolitan areas to our west, there is clear evidence that many communities have effectively converged on their priorities in very visible ways. And when there is convergence, it seems as if progress is inescapable. I have grandchildren now, and they have experienced numerous…

A big shout-out to Alison Lord Stuart for her piece on voter IDs in Tuesday’s paper.

You are right on the “mark” regarding voter IDs. My husband and I have lived in many states, all of which required a voter ID at election time — until we came to North Carolina.

At each…

Last night (Monday, Feb. 11) I attended ECU baseball banquet in the new student union. There were almost 600 people there and they were treated to a great program.

Some facts that were revealed were that this team has a 3.44 grade point average which is the highest in the American Athletic…

Donald Trump once again exhibited his extreme ignorance, irrationality and intransigence in contradicting the analysis of his three top intelligence chiefs before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Jan. 29. It's hard to imagine how pompous a person must be to think he knows more than his FBI…

Mr. Kammerer's fine article on the Jones-Lee House (in The Daily Reflector on Sunday) highlights the urgent need to save one of the few remaining architectural structures of historic and aesthetic value left in our poor city.
