Recently the Greenville Advocacy Team of the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) met at Congressman G.K. Butterfield's Wilson office for a conference call with his legislative director in D.C., Kyle Parker. Also on this call was the FCNL team from Durham. The purpose of this call was to urge the congressman to sign on to HR 1274, which is the repeal of the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).

Since 9/11, the AUMF has pretty much been handed over to the current president to authorize the use of our troops whenever and wherever he deems necessary. The AUMF was originally passed requiring Congress to debate and decide such matters — not the president. We currently have troops stationed in over 18 countries around the world. It is imperative that Congress takes back this decision-making responsibility before committing more troops in the future.

I am very happy to report that Congressman Butterfield has now signed on to this bill. We need more members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation to follow his lead and also endorse Bill HR 1274. Please urge those members to do so; but in the meantime, contact G.K. Butterfield and thank him for signing on at 252-237-9816 or butterfield.house.gov.

The day after Hurricane Dorian blew through, it was nice to see that one of our Town Council members was going around our community to see what damage was caused. The most comforting aspect of her inspection was that she rang my doorbell to check on one of her elder constituents — me. Thank…

I was a Climate Change Denier

with my head deep in the sand,

Then came the heat, that killed all the crops,

And left the dried up land.

I was a Climate Change Denier

with my head deep in the sand,

Then up came winds and down came rain,

And flooded all the land.

I was a Climate Change Denier

In a crazy mixed up world one thing that has changed for the worse is community and neighbors supporting each other. As a true artist, one that has no choice but to art or die, I have been set up for years at the corner of Bullhead and Fort Run Road here in Greene County. Most days consist of hard…

We've had guns since the beginning of this country. But it wasn't until the Republican party became a wholly owned subsidiary of the NRA (who used to…

From my distant perspective half-a-world away here in Australia, it seems the ECU Pirate football program began to decline (with respect to Ruff) when Lincoln Riley left for Oklahoma, then went further downhill under Scottie Montgomery the last three years.

Coach Mike Houston obviously has a…

The recent purchase by the city of the “Big Splash” property on U.S. 264 by the Tar River is indeed good news. The 163 acres is intended to “create a park focused on river and lake-based recreational activities,” something sorely needed in Greenville. The property includes a…

In December 1999, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina had plans to open a branch in Greenville to help better serve our neighbors in the east. However, Hurricane Floyd had different plans.

Shamefully, ECU fraternity and sorority students can be manipulated by a narrow clique in town to seat a Greenville City Council majority to do the bidding of that narrow special interest clique. We want students voting. But it’s another thing if students are lied to and offered bribes by…

Getting right to the point and pulling no punches: Donald Trump is a sick, selfish, stupid person who should never have been elected president. His chaotic, divisive, autocratic style of governing has set our democracy on a steady downhill course. He has not done this alone, however. His house is…
