No, Dr. Soderstrom, “sociopathic nihilists” (Public Forum Aug. 18) are not the “real problem.” “Sociopathic nihilists” armed with high-capacity, rapid firing, military-style assault rifles — rifles designed for no other purpose than people-hunting — are the “real problem.”

These are the weapons that allowed a “sociopathic nihilist” in Dayton to kill nine people in 30 seconds and another shooter in El Paso to kill 22 people — just two of over 250 mass shootings in this country to date in 2019 alone.

Their possession apparently provides some sense of security for paranoid minds. But they scare the bejesus out of sane folks — people who refuse to have their minds hijacked by the NRA, a once proud defender of guns for hunting and sport that is now nothing more than a scandal-ridden shill for the arms industry.

Of course, despite the obviously compelling need for an assault weapons ban, Dr. Soderstrom need have no worries about such action while the Donald is in the White House. Last time Trump was in Greenville, his unhinged audience shouted “Send Her Back!” Next time he is here, the chant will probably be, “Gun them Down!”

In a crazy mixed up world one thing that has changed for the worse is community and neighbors supporting each other. As a true artist, one that has no choice but to art or die, I have been set up for years at the corner of Bullhead and Fort Run Road here in Greene County. Most days consist of hard…

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

We've had guns since the beginning of this country. But it wasn't until the Republican party became a wholly owned subsidiary of the NRA (who used to…

From my distant perspective half-a-world away here in Australia, it seems the ECU Pirate football program began to decline (with respect to Ruff) when Lincoln Riley left for Oklahoma, then went further downhill under Scottie Montgomery the last three years.

Coach Mike Houston obviously has a…

The recent purchase by the city of the “Big Splash” property on U.S. 264 by the Tar River is indeed good news. The 163 acres is intended to “create a park focused on river and lake-based recreational activities,” something sorely needed in Greenville. The property includes a…

In honor of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a group of engaged citizens gathered together to view the documentary “An Endless War-Getting Out of Afghanistan.”

In December 1999, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina had plans to open a branch in Greenville to help better serve our neighbors in the east. However, Hurricane Floyd had different plans.

Following the storm, the Greenville Food Bank opened and began to immediately provide…

Shamefully, ECU fraternity and sorority students can be manipulated by a narrow clique in town to seat a Greenville City Council majority to do the bidding of that narrow special interest clique. We want students voting. But it’s another thing if students are lied to and offered bribes by…

Getting right to the point and pulling no punches: Donald Trump is a sick, selfish, stupid person who should never have been elected president. His chaotic, divisive, autocratic style of governing has set our democracy on a steady downhill course. He has not done this alone, however. His house is…

As a moderate I am certainly disappointed with our choices for president of the United States. Trump’s tweets and methods of governing certainly do not resonate with me.

Yet, on the Democratic side there is no moderate candidate left. Reps. John Delaney and Tim Ryan both defended capitalism…

One Sept. 2, a three judge panel ruled that the legislative maps currently in use in our state are unconstitutional.

The framers of our constitution envisioned that there would be a fair election process where the citizens of this state would choose their representatives free of overtly partisan…
