Stop the madness

I am responding to the Sunday, Aug. 18, letter titled “Gun Control Lobby Misleads.”
The writer references the anti-gun lobby statistics (notice he labeled it “anti-gun” instead of pro-gun laws lobby) related to firearm deaths as bogus. Whether his accusations are correct or wrong, I don't care. They are meaningless one way or the other. Common sense is needed here.
Then, he shows how creditable he is by doing what he blames others for doing: Putting out false information which is a habitual ploy by Bible-thumping, so-called conservatives. His claim that liberals want to violate the right to bear arms is completely false. Responsible citizens just don't want people to have military assault weapons, such as AK15s, nuclear weapons, bazookas, rocket launchers, armored tanks or machine guns.
Ridiculous? Well, assault rifles are common now, so where do we stop this madness? It is a given that “brave” Trump supporters would want any or all weapons mentioned. Brave? Why the need for assault weapons?
For over 50 years I have heard the Republicans/NRA repeatedly lie that Democrats want to take everyone’s guns away — a lie originating from “honest” NRA leaders while reported evidence shows them stealing NRA members' money, plus dealing with Russians. Millions of gullible people repeat it.
What citizen needs an assault weapon? The military and police? Yes! Private citizens? No! If hunters want them, they are lousy shooters, plus have no sportsmanship. As for protection against a predator, that would be something to see if one's assault gun is safely/lawfully stored and had to be gotten out of case/rack to shoot a break-in predator.
About 55 years ago I carried a .38-special in my truck, then one day the light came on, “live by the sword, die by the sword.” Never again.
