Collard Festival highlights

The 43rd annual Ayden Collard Festival continues this weekend in downtown Ayden. Here are some of the highlights of “The Official Collard Festival of the State of North Carolina.”
The art show will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. today at the Ayden Community Building, 548 Second St. At 6 p.m. today, carnival rides open and the Shimmy Shakers line dancing club will take the West Avenue Stage, followed by Trenice Atkinson at 7 p.m. and the Fantasy Band at 8 p.m.
Saturday’s events begin with a horseshoe tournament at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park on Third Street. Rides, arts and crafts and food vendors open at 9 a.m., followed by the official opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on West Avenue Stage and a parade at 11 a.m. A corn hole tournament will be held at 1:30 p.m. behind Ayden Town Hall.
Featured entertainment throughout the day will include Caroline Girls Line Dancers, Smiles and Frowns Playhouse and a martial arts demonstration by Carolina Heat. Spin-Man, a performance featuring basketball tricks, will be featured at 1 and 4 p.m.
The annual Collard Eating Contest will begin at 2 p.m. Musician Steve Graham will sing an original tribute song in honor of record-holder Mort Hurst’s return to the contest.
Other musical entertainment scheduled for Saturday includes: Abby Jones, Andro Brown and Men of Faith (6-7:30 p.m. on the Second Street stage), and Johnny Cutrell, followed by Band of Oz (7-9 p.m. on West Avenue Stage).
