Tone-Loc, the hip hop legend from the 1990s, will headline this year’s main concert at PirateFest along with 90s star Biz Markie, Uptown Greenville announced on Thursday.

Loc and Markie will throw back to the last century at the Greenville Toyota Amphitheater at Town Common stage from 4-8 p.m. on April 13 as the grand finale for a festival that draws thousands onto Evans Street and the common each spring. The concert is free thanks to a sponsorship by Minges Bottling Group and East Carolina University.

Pirate Fest starts on Friday, April 12, with wristband night carnival rides and the street food festival with more than 40 art vendors and a variety of entertainment. Also on Friday country music star Jimmie Allen will take the Town Common stage.

Allen’s debut single, “Best Shot,” is a certified hit, claiming the No. 1 spot on country radio, Uptown’s announcement said. Allen’s music features a cutting-edge mix of country, rock, R&B and pop, drawing upon the influences of his family and small-town upbringing.

The 90s throwback will cap a day of Pirate festivities on Saturday, April 14.

Known for his hit “Just A Friend,” The legendary Biz Markie brings more than 30 years of solid hip-hop brilliance and notoriety, the announcement said. His music stardom began in 1985 as he beatboxed his way into the hearts of hip-hop lovers while delivering humorous, witty rhymes.

Tone-Loc soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his raspy voice and unmistakable delivery made the song "Wild Thing" a massive hit, the announcement said.

The song was co-written by Marvin Young, better known as Young MC, as was the second single smash, "Funky Cold Medina." The album Loc-ed After Dark became the second rap release ever to top the pop charts.

I moved to Greenville in 1997 and as a poor, struggling college student, my meals consisted of ramen noodles, fast food, pizzas, and bread and water. OK, so that sounds kind of harsh, but you understand the food dilemma that attaches itself to college students.

The only time we could enjoy a nice…
