In the South the word sugar has many meanings. To southern women, “Sugar” is a term of endearment or for some, a warning that you are about to be hugged when they say “come give me some sugar.” For others, sugar is verb referring to anything that is sweetened, sprinkled, or coated with...sugar. So no matter what type of sweetness you you crave, Duck Donuts located at 420 A. Arlington Blvd. in Greenville has the answer. Located in Arlington Shoppes, Duck Donuts cranks out an average of 8,000 donuts a week, so there is no lack of sugar inside their doors.

The first store opened twelve years ago in Duck, NC, hence the name, Duck Donuts. Since then, they have grown to over fifteen stores in NC with five of those in the Outer Banks. They also have stores located up and down the East Coast. Store manager, Maranda Long has been with Duck Donuts for over three years. She is my donut guide for my tasting. It’s a fun, easy way to get some sugar. All made-to-order Duck Donuts start with a light vanilla cake-style donut. Then it’s as easy as coat, top, drizzle and eat! Pick from twelve coatings including powdered sugar, chocolate, maple, strawberry, lemon, blueberry, peanut butter, glazed, vanilla or a seasonal flavor. Next, choose your topping. There are rainbow sprinkles, chocolate, shredded coconut, crushed graham cracker, chopped peanuts, Oreo crumbles, chopped bacon or a seasonal topping. The final step in this donut fashion show is the top drizzle. Choose from raspberry, blackberry, salted caramel, marshmallow, hot fudge, or the seasonal drizzle. Here is my favorite part. You don’t have to pick just one of each. You can have your cake donut the way you want with all the glitz, glamour and flavors you’re craving. Add multiple coatings, drizzles and toppings and pay no additional fee. Now that is donut heaven!

Some of the signature donuts on their “Shore to Please” menu are a few beach worthy favorites including the beach ball donut which has vanilla icing, chocolate drizzle, and rainbow sprinkles. Or maybe you want to select the boardwalk donut which is a glazed donut with Oreo crumbles, powdered sugar, and vanilla drizzle. Or, maybe you want to go shell seeking and choose the sand dollar donut which has vanilla icing with powdered sugar and shredded coconut. Single donuts cost $1.40, a half dozen is $7.50, a dozen is $13.50, or choose a bucket-load of eighteen for $21. Okay, so it’s not actually served in a bucket but they call it that because that was their initial idea, to serve all eighteen in a bucket, but there was not a bucket that worked, but the name stuck.

Duck Donuts just rolled out their new popsicle donut assortment just in time for summer. They’re filled with bright flavors, colorful toppings, and pops of citrus all associated with summer popsicle flavors. The new assortment includes a patriotic pop donut with sweet glaze and red, white, and blue sprinkles, the fudge pop, cookies & cream, ice cream sandwich, Neapolitan, chocolate-nut sundae and several other swoon-worthy donuts.

For my tasting, I sampled three of the donuts from the new assortment. The first one was the orange creamsicle. This was made with orange glaze made with fresh orange juice and orange zest, and then it’s drizzled with vanilla. This donut reminded me of when I was a little kid and we used to eat orange push-up pops at the pool. It tasted just like those summer days, cool and refreshing with a subtle orange citrus pop.

The next donut I tried was the strawberry shortcake. It had strawberry glaze and was drizzled with vanilla and sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs. This tasted like a sweet summer breeze of fruitiness. When I was young, I had a Strawberry Shortcake doll and when you squeezed her belly she smelled like fresh strawberries. This donut is a sweet nod to that doll and was cool and delicious.

The last donut I tried was the key lime pop. This donut was bathed in a bright, green key lime glaze made with fresh lime juice and zest and then sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs. This one with its bright and refreshing citrus vibe transports you to Key West Florida for summer sun and fun in every bite.

Duck Donuts also serves a variety of coffees and espresso-based lattes that go great with your sweet treat. Riptide Roast is their signature dark roast, Lighthouse Blend is their light roast, and Sunset Pier is their decaf roast. You can also select from various lattes or one of their new frozen drinks. If you need a little coffee fuel in your frozen drink, then choose the cinnamon swirl, honey latte, caramel macchiato, salted caramel mocha, or s’mores mocha. If you prefer a coffee-free frozen drink, then select birthday cake, cookies & cream, or toasted marshmallow. I tried the cookies & cream drink made with milk, Oreos, and white chocolate sauce. It was Cookie Monster approved, sweet, and delicious. It gets hot enough in summer that you can go by often and change up your flavors. You can also choose a hot coffee beverage, or for those that need dairy free, they can make your drink with almond milk.

Now that I have made you homesick for your childhood and the beach, you can find comfort and flavor at Duck Donuts in Greenville anytime you are craving that Southern sugar. Come by for a sweet breakfast, an afternoon pick-me up, a tasty treat with the kids after school, or as an after-dinner dessert. No matter how you coat, top, or drizzle your donut you can go back for endless possibilities of flavor combinations. In honor of National Donut Day on June 7th, Duck Donuts will be giving away a free bare cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar donut all day. No coupon is needed, but this offer is only available in-store.

Duck Donuts is open Monday to Thursday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. They are available to cater your next event or choose them for your wedding and serve donuts instead of cake. They are also partnered with Uber Eats, Grubhub, and Takeout Pros, so if want your sugar sweetness delivered, they have you covered. Every day we have to figure out what we want to eat. Our taste buds, the weather and even our emotions help us determine what we choose to feed not only our bellies, but our souls. We often choose foods and tastes that bring back memories. I talk about this often: food and memory go hand-in-hand.…
