I am quitting TV journalism. From now on, I'm getting my news from the papers. I have been thinking about it for a long time, but I finally decided when a friend of mine told me his story:

I was watching Nicole Wallace one afternoon as she preached about the imminent collapse of democracy as we know it. "Sweetie, you can tell me that the country is going to perdition in a pushcart any time, night or day." That kind of inappropriate thought is one reason why I started thinking, "No more TV news." To me, an articulate woman is just really attractive, so all these female journalists are bound to lead my thoughts astray.

Zelda, my granddaughter, sat in a big easy chair playing games on her cell phone. I didn't think she was listening until I said, "Wow, that Nicole Wallace is really cute."

Suddenly, steam started coming out of Zelda's ears. She leaned over the arm of the chair and glared at me as only an 11 year old can. "You have a wife!"

"I just said she's cute."

"You have a wife!"

"I didn't ask her for a date, I just said ..."

"You have a wife!"

"For crying out loud, I'm not running off to Cancun with her!"

"You have a wife!"

I know when I'm beat. I just needed to figure out how to negotiate the surrender. Finally, I said, "Zelda, I think it's really cool the way you take up for your grandmother."

She said nothing, but the look on her face said, "OK, I'll let you live. For now."

She went back to her video games. I remembered that she was in a "relationship" with her first boyfriend. So later on she explained to me that her boyfriend would never say that some other girl was cute. You just don't do that.

I tried to explain that her grandmother of "You have a wife!" fame would not be upset in the least. I look at attractive TV journalists all the time and say "Hey, she's cute." My wife just smiles indulgently, secure in the knowledge that she's the only woman on the planet who could tolerate me.

Try explaining that to an 11 year kid who has about six weeks experience in relationships

The old gray stallion ain't what he used to be, but he can be taught. So a few weeks later I had to pick Zelda up early at school. As we walked out of the office, the guidance counselor walked in and offered me a very warm hello. In the months before, we had chatted several times as I waited in line to pick up Zelda after school. Guidance counselors are often compassionate people who are kind to dinosaurs like myself. Or maybe in school she had double-majored in psychology and paleontology. Anyway, she was nice to me.

So, as we walked to the car I said to Zelda, "That was Sabrina, wasn't it?"

She glared at me. "That's Mrs. Johnson."

"Yeah, well, she's not as pretty as grandma, is she?"

Zelda said nothing. But she smiled. I would live yet another day.

(That's the story as it was told to me. The names have been changed to protect the guilty. And from now on, no TV news, I'm reading the paper.)

I moved to Greenville in 1997 and as a poor, struggling college student, my meals consisted of ramen noodles, fast food, pizzas, and bread and water. OK, so that sounds kind of harsh, but you understand the food dilemma that attaches itself to college students.

The only time we could enjoy a nice…
