BELMONT, N.C. (AP) — Construction of a $20 million college seminary is set to get under way in North Carolina.

The St. Joseph College Seminary, in the Diocese of Charlotte, held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday for its new and permanent home in Belmont.

The Gaston Gazette reports that the two-story building will include a chapel, classroom, library, kitchen, cafeteria, faculty offices and a guest room for speakers and visiting priests. It will also include 40 dorm rooms for seminarians.

The seminary is expected to take about 15 months to build.

In partnership with Belmont Abbey College, the program provides men age 18 and up the necessary undergraduate education to prepare for the priesthood.

The Gazette reports that it is the only such college seminary program in the southeast, between northern Virginia and southern Florida.
