PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island animal rescue organization has opened its doors to animals from hurricane-hit areas in Virginia and South Carolina.

Bracing for Hurricane Florence, the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington took in more than 30 dogs, including puppies, from Martinsville, Virginia earlier this week. That freed up space for other dogs in low-lying shelters.

The no-kill New York animal organization in Port Washington will make the dogs available for adoption. More were expected from Orangeburg, South Carolina, where volunteers there saved animals and owners from rising waters.

Donations are requested in New York for the animals, including bottled water, dog bowls, paper towels, treats, litter boxes and other supplies.

North Shore workers are looking for other animals in need of shelter in the wake of Florence.
