Tuesday, Nov. 06 Midterm elections - Midterm elections, marking the midpoint of President Donald Trump’s first term in office, with votes cast for 35 members of the Senate (including special elections in Minnesota and Mississippi), all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and 39 state and territorial governorships * The Republican Party currently hold majorities in both chambers of Congress (51-49 in the Senate and 235-193 in the House, with seven vacancies), but polls and history suggest the Democrats are in a good position to take back the House, as only three times since the Civil War has the incumbent president’s party not lost seats in the lower chamber in the midterm elections * Democrats are defending 26 of the Senate seats up for election, including 10 in states that were won by President Trump in the 2016 election * A record number of women are on the ballot this year: 235 for the House (183 Democrats and 52 Republicans); 22 for the Senate (15 Dems and seven Republicans); and 16 for governor (12 Dems and four Republicans)
