BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) — A Christian university in North Carolina has named an East Carolina University dean to be its next president
The Charlotte Observer reports William Downs will begin his term as president of Gardner-Webb University on July 1. The 51-year-old is the dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences at ECU.
Gardner-Webb is a liberal arts university in Boiling Springs. About 4,500 students attend the school.
Trustees confirmed Downs’ appointment after a yearlong national search to replace former president Frank Bonner, who announced his retirement.
Downs says he was attracted to Gardner-Webb by its mission and underlying values, its people and programs, and its rich traditions of excellence. He earned his bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees in political science from Emory University.
