State filing shows 81 Suddenlink employees affected by call center closing

Eighty-one Suddenlink employees are being laid off as the result of a call center closure that was announced last month, according to information provided by the state division of Workforce Development.
Suddenlink did not disclose the number of permanent layoffs when the original announcement was made July 14.
The North Carolina Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires businesses that employ at least 100 full time workers to file a notice providing 60 days advance notice of certain plant closings and mass layoffs, according to Workforce Development, a division of the state commerce development.
The notice was filed July 14. The layoffs are expected to begin as early as Sept. 15.
Suddenlink said it was closing the Greenville call center because it wanted to transfer the work to larger call centers.
"We are migrating call center activities to some of Suddenlink’s larger call centers in the U.S. based on call volume, and where we have the greatest number of business partners," according to a statement Suddenlink released in July.
The Suddenlink customer walk-in center at 2120 W. Arlington Blvd. and other business functions and operations will remain open. Information about how many people will remain employed at its Greenville operation is unknown.
The company said in July that employees will have the option of applying for jobs at other Suddenlink locations.
“Since we last spoke, we have assisted many employees in finding positions. These include relocation,” said Lisa Anselmo, a corporate spokeswoman. “Additionally, some employees are also transitioning to other local Suddenlink positions in Greenville.”
Other employees have secured jobs in other organizations through the outplacement services and workshops Suddenlink sponsored, she said.
Anselmo declined to say how many of the 81 employees have found additional employment.
Suddenlink was purchased by Altice, a Luxembourg-based multinational corporation, late last year.
Prior to its acquisition by Altice, Suddenlink was the seventh-largest U.S. cable operator with 1.5 million residential and 90,000 business customers. It operates in specific North Carolina markets but its operations primarily are focused in Texas, West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas and Arizona. In 2014, Suddenlink generated $2.3 billion in revenue.
