The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine on Saturday hosting its second annual Girl Scouts Merit Badge Day.
Forty local Girl Scouts visited the school for a fun-filled morning of learning about the field of dentistry. Dental students, faculty and staff led the girls in hand-on activities that taught them about dental professions, oral hygiene and nutrition.
The three-hour event introduced the scouts to the sophisticated labs, instruments and techniques used by oral health professionals in caring for patients.
It was geared to raise awareness about the importance of proper oral hygiene and reducing soft drinks in the diet, a news release said. It also exposed the scouts to the academic choices that can lead to careers in medicine or dental medicine.
