The city of Greenville has hired Byron Hayes as its new director of Financial Services.
Hayes will replace Bernita Demery, who retired on March 31 after three decades of service to the city.
"I have big shoes to fill," Hayes said in a news release from the city. "Mrs. Demery's 30-year tenure was filled with many successes. I look forward to this challenge, and I'm ready to continue the fine work of our department, to take Financial Services to the next level and ensure that we are good stewards of the taxpayer funds."
According to the release, Hayes will be responsible for directing the city's accounting, purchasing, and collections divisions. He also will be heavily involved in the financial reporting for the city, and managing debt and financing for capital projects.
Hayes will begin his new role on today. His salary has been set at $104,728.
Hayes graduated from East Carolina University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He began his career with the city as a financial analyst in November 2014, and has worked as a business analyst and financial services manager since. He graduated with a masters of business administration from ECU in 2016. Prior to joining the city staff, he held positions at Vidant Medical Center and BB&T.
"The mission of the city of Greenville Financial Services Department is 'Providing sustainable financial management that exceeds the expectations of our customers,'" Hayes said. "I want to ensure that we provide superior service to all of our stakeholders by ensuring that our organization functions in an efficient and effective manner. The City Council put forth a vision with a series of goals and objectives, and Financial Services intends to carry out the operations of the city in a manner that reflects and enhances those goals and objectives."
City Manager Ann Wall said the city was excited about bringing Hayes into the job.
"We are thrilled to have Byron accept the position of Financial Services director," she said. "Byron has demonstrated strong leadership, and he has a proven track record with the city of Greenville. He will do an excellent job of ensuring the city's Financial Services Department is operating efficiently."
