A Greenville man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred early Saturday morning near Pitt Greenville Airport, police announced on Sunday.

Steven Jerome Keel, 33, has been charged with a felony hit-and-run-death and operating a vehicle with no insurance in connection to the death of 25-year-old Charles Benjamin Smith Jr., the Greenville Police Department reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Saturday when Smith was struck by a car in the area of North Memorial Drive near West Gum Road. The driver involved left the scene of the crash.

Police said a citizen alerted them Saturday afternoon to a 2012 Chrysler 200 matching the suspect vehicle description with extensive front-end damage.

It was parked in the area off MaCgregor Downs Road in Forest Glen Apartments, a department news release said. The car in question had its license plate removed.

Keel initially told officers he did not own the car, police said. Officers executed a serach warrant of Keel’s residence at 915 Allen Road, Apt. C, and located keys and paperwork for the vehicle.
