In response to longer-than expected wait times at local driver's license offices, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles said it's going to make a series of changes to try to provide relief to the situation, including by bringing in more personnel.
NCDMV officials, in a news release on Tuesday, said they are working to hire more than 100 new license examiners at offices statewide. The NCDMV officials said this includes filling 80 current vacancies and adding 34 additional temporary and permanent examiners.
People wanting to renew their licenses in person at a local driver's license office can make an appointment in advance by phone at 919-715-7000.
Presently, the problem has been citizens are having to sit at length at local driver's license offices, particularly as more of them seek to obtain what's called REAL ID cards.
In an attempt to toughen national security, the federal government has set an October 2020 deadline for citizens to obtain the REAL ID cards so they will be able to board commercial airliners and enter military bases.
The REAL ID card is like a traditional driver's license or identification card, but has a gold star at the top.
As for the situation at the driver's license stations, NCDMV officials said they are going to deploy additional staffers to the busiest offices and also have a phone system to help citizens find nearby offices with appointment availability.
The NCDMV officials also said they are going to put staff is in place to make sure local residents in line have got the correct paperwork ready, and also find out if they can get business done online rather than having to wait in line.
The officials said they also are going to create express lines for customers who have quick transactions in offices with available space.
The changes are going to include setting up dedicated road test teams so NCDMV examiners do not to leave their desks to conduct the road tests, officials said.
Additionally, NCDMV has a website with information about driver's license renewals at https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/renewal-replacement/Pages/default.aspx
