Former Pitt County Sheriff Billy L. Vandiford died Sunday at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, according to family. His passing came after more than two years of failing health.
Vandiford served two terms, a total of eight years, as Pitt County’s highest law enforcement officer, from 1990 to 1998. He had previously retired as a law enforcement officer from the Fairfax County Police Department, located near Washington, D.C.
The family of Vandiford said funeral arrangements will be announced in a few days.
“Our husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend loved the people of Pitt County and thoroughly appreciated his eight years of service as sheriff,” the family said in a statement.
“We will remember him for all the love, concern, care and compassion he brought to all of us."
