Area law enforcement officers are planning to takeover the roof at a Greenville Walmart today and not leave it until people give them 250 bicycles for the Toys for Tots campaign.

The Winterville Police Department is leading the second Cops On The Roof effort starting at 8 a.m. at the Walmart Supercenter at 210 S.W. Greenville Blvd. Officers from Greenville, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, Farmville, Ayden, Grifton, Bethel, Vidant police and ECU police also are participating.

The officers have been working to collect bikes for children throughout Pitt County to have for Christmas. Some donations are expected but the effort also is counting on community members to join in by delivering bikes to the Walmart or buying them from the store directly for the effort.

The police will stay on the roof until their goal is reached, and they hope community members won’t leave them up there for too long.

The effort last year quickly surpassed its goal of 100, encouraging officers to set their sights higher this year.

All of the bikes will be distributed by the departments and through Toys for Tots, which is coordinated by Churches Outreach Network in conjunction with area missions, outreach organizations and governmental agencies.
