The city of Greenville is closing part of West Eighth Street beginning 7:30 a.m. Wednesday because of continuing work on the Town Creek Culvert project.
The section between Evans Street and Dickinson Avenue is expected to be closed through March for utility work, according to a city news release.
Motorists should detour onto Evans Street, Ninth Street, Ficklen Street and Dickinson Avenue.
Town Creek Culvert was built more than 83 years ago, according to historical records, and drains stormwater from about 250 acres in the downtown area.
However, the system has been deteriorating, causing pavement failures along Reade Circle elsewhere and creating localized flooding during heavy downpours.
Work began on the nearly $33 million project in March and is expected to take 30 months to complete.
