Repair work temporarily closing GUC entrance

Changes are taking place at GUC and that means a temporary switch for customers starting on Monday.

The Greene Street entrance of Greenville Utilities Commission’s main office is scheduled to close starting Monday as construction works begins on the building’s exterior. Customers will be directed to use the building’s Washington Street entrance.

“Our parking lot will still be open and we will have huge banners pointing towards the Washington Street entrance,” said Steve Hawley, GUC communications manager.

Fencing already has gone up to protect customers and employees from construction activity. The South Greene Street entrance will remain open today and Friday.

GUC is undertaking a $3.7 million renovation of its 45-year-old headquarters located at 401 S. Greene St.

During a January presentation on the project to GUC’s board, Kevin Keyzer, risk and facilities manager, said the exterior is deteriorating and difficult to clean.

The building will be clad in composite metal pieces and the lower area will be encased in brick or brick-like materials. Awnings and sunscreens will be added to reduce the building’s solar load and cut down on energy costs. There will be new landscaping as well.

The project should be completed by December, Hawley said.

The Washington Street entrance opens to the section of building that once housed Wells Fargo and did not previously connect to GUC’s customer service area. A temporary entrance has been built to provide access, Hawley said. Signs will direct customers once inside the building.

Initially, only the building’s exterior was undergoing work. When Wells Fargo vacated its space, GUC decided to renovate the first floor to incorporate the drive-thru area into the customer service section. Switching the location of customer service will allow GUC to install additional office space.
