Trying to decide between French fries and a baked potato?

Pitt County residents who would like to make better-informed food choices can get this skinny this afternoon, during an event in honor of National Nutrition Month.

The Pitt County Health Department, in partnership with the United Way, will host a WIC Fun Day from 1-3 p.m. at the health department, located at 201 Government Circle, Greenville. The event is free and open to anyone who is interested.

This year, the main focus of National Nutrition Month is to emphasize the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits, according to a health department news release.

The Fun Day will have interactive nutrition activities and games for children, as well as, healthy foods to taste.

A cooking demonstration will showcase an easy-to-make black bean and cheese quesadilla and a healthier brown rice pudding that participants can sample. Recipes will be provided and registered dietitians and students will be onsite to answer questions.

Representatives from the United Way and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will also be at the event. Imagination Library is a program that offers free books to children each month. Children between the ages of birth and five years of age are invited to register. Samples of books will be available and information on how to sign up will be provided.

Parents are encouraged to register their children while at the nutrition event. They also can register online. The program allows participants to increase their child’s awareness and enjoyment of reading at an early age, according to the news release.
