A Rocky Mount man is dead and his girlfriend is in custody after the pair allegedly tried to rob a vape shop late Monday night in Washington, N.C.
Grant “Monkey” Waters, 42, was killed at the scene, and Mindy Renee Sullivan, 38, also of Rocky Mount, was arrested Tuesday as an accomplice, Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford said Wednesday.
Waters and Sullivan on Monday night attempted to rob the Player’s Vape Shop, a sweepstakes parlor on U.S. 264 West in Washington. Waters reportedly attempted to hold a customer hostage and fired shots at an employee, who was a concealed carry holder. The employee returned fire and Waters was pronounced dead at the scene, Drakeford said.
Decals on the front door of the vape shop read “This home is protected by the Second Amendment. Armed occupants! Nothing in here worth dying for!”
According to records from the state Department of Public Safety, Grant has numerous convictions relating to crimes occurring across the state. His first conviction was in 1993 in Edgecombe County for possession of a weapon on campus.
Since then he has been convicted of offenses in Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Columbus and Brunswick counties. His last conviction was in 2015 in Nash County for a felony breaking and entering and larceny that took place on Oct. 14, 2014. He was released from prison in December 2017 and his parole ended in September 2018.
Washington police arrested Sullivan on Wednesday in connection with the vape shop robbery. She has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree kidnapping. Sullivan was jailed under a $150,000 secured bond in the Beaufort County Detention Center.
Drakeford said the incident is still under investigation.
“We may be looking at other arrests,” Drakeford said.
