The Pitt County Veterans Council is hosting its annual Memorial Day ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. today at the Greenville Town Common, 105 E. First St.
The event will include a wreath-laying by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans, remarks by Greenville Mayor P.J. Connelly and state Rep. Greg Murphy, music by the New Horizons band and Emery Davis, a posting of colors by the Ayden-Grifton High School Color Guard and more.
Congress in 1971 set aside the last Monday in May to remember and honor all the men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces. It has its origins in Decoration Day observances, which began following the Civil War.
The holiday also serves as an unofficial kickoff to the summer season.
River Park North, 1000 Mumford Road, also will have free fishing from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on today in honor of the holiday. State permits are required for ages 16 and older. Call 329-4560.
Splashpoint at the Dream Park, 1700 Chestnut St., also will be open today and Monday. The park will be open weekends only until June 10. Free. Hours are noon-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday. For more information call 328-4563 or 329-4041.
