Winterville's Biscuit and the Bean Café has chalked up a sweet victory in a national competition.
Laura Smith, co-owner and chef at the Biscuit and the Bean, is a southeast region winner in the 2019 Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest from General Mills Foodservice.
The fifth annual contest called on independent family or neighborhood restaurants to submit an original recipe to put their local dishes and local flavor in the national spotlight.
As a regional winner in the contest, Smith will receive $5,000 as well as $1,000 to share with a local charity. She has chosen Timbo’s Tower, which will help build a training tower for the Winterville fire department.
"We know most of our customers personally and are aware of what they are going through and we are there for them,” Smith said. “Community is important to us and the best way to have a good community is to be a part of it.”
Smith’s Pear Tart is one of two southeast region winners in the contest. Made with Gold Medal SuperMoist Yellow Cake Mix for a cookie-like crust, the tart has a cream cheese filling, pears and caramel drizzle to balance flavor and texture.
Smith also is in the running for the grand prize, to be announced later this month. One of 10 regional winners will be named the grand prize recipe recipient and will receive a total of $10,000 in cash and $2,000 for charity, as well as a three-day trip for two to the Food Network & Cooking Channel New York City Wine & Food Festival this October, a food and wine event celebrating American foods.
Smith also can win an additional $1,000 for her charity as the contest opened up a social voting element on Facebook, which runs through Friday.
Representatives from General Mills will visit the restaurant, at 168 Beacon Drive, Winterville, on Aug. 23 to showcase the Biscuit and the Bean and celebrate Smith’s award-winning recipe with a special check presentation and celebratory event that the community is invited to attend. Smith also will present a check to Timbo’s Tower at the event.
