Pitt County Post 39’s American Legion baseball team already was guaranteed a spot in the state tournament as the host team and because it made its area championship game, but it rolled to a blowout anyway on Sunday during the Area 1 championship game in Wendell.
Post 39 beat Garner 12-0 in seven innings to take the Area 1 title in a game that was mainly played for state tournament seeding. The win gave Pitt the area title for the second straight year.
Christian Stokes pitched six of the innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts before Clay Wilson tossed a scoreless seventh. Offensively, Macon Langston had a double and a triple as part of a four-RBI outing, Philip Boykin finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Sammy Craft 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
The state tourney will begin Friday at Pitt Community College.
