Riley Cutler is a normal 13 year old girl, until she steps on the sand. Cutler has worked to become one of the top 100 beach volleyball players in the country for her age group. Preps writer Jake Keator talked with Cutler about what it is like to earn the recognition and what it feels like to work with coaches at the Carolina East Volleyball Club.

Q: How did you originally get started playing beach volleyball?

A: “I started playing volleyball for fun. I was playing and I met Hailey, (Davenport, a member of Carolina East) she invited me and I just loved it and wanted to keep playing.”

Q: What is your practice schedule like?

A: “We are out practicing between three and four days a week, usually for about two to four hours each time. I try to work with the older girls mostly. I like to learn from them.”

Q: What are your coaches like at Carolina East?

A: “I can not thank my coaches enough for what they do. They always push us when we think we can’t push anymore. We have a good connection with them and they always have a saying for everything.”

Q: What is your favorite saying you hear from the coaches?

A: “Mine is probably ‘Turn and Burn.’”

Q: What do they mean when they tell you that?

A: “When they tell me that they just want me to move quick and get back into position and get ready.”

Q: What is the feeling like when you know you've won the match?

A: “I’m usually thinking, ‘Thank goodness!’ I really enjoy being out there, but it gets hot. I know that all the hard work I've put in is worth it in the end.”

East Carolina football will hold its second and final preseason scrimmage today at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
