Greenville native Bryce Hendrix, a senior at UNC Greensboro, set school records at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, leading his Spartans to a first-place finish and earning him Southern Conference player of the month for April.
Hendrix captured the individual title at the meet, firing a 66-65-62 for a 20-under-par 193. The 62 by the D.H. Conley High School graduate in the third round set a UNCG record for an 18-hole score. His total score for the 54-hole event also smashed the previous school mark of 203, by Carter Jenkins in 2013.
He recorded 21 birdies during the weekend with only one bogey. He carded six straight birdies on the back nine in the third round.
Hendrix went on to finish in a tie for sixth place in the SoCon Championship tournament, helping the team win its second straight league title. He shot 74-72-74, highlighted by 13 straight pars on the final day to earn selection to the All-Southern Conference team.
Hendrix and the rest of the Spartans team will play in the NCAA Stanford Regional, beginning May 13.
The team of Justin Hardee and Chris Holmes captured first place in Greenville Country Club's two-man Texas scramble at Men's Night last Wednesday. Second place went to Sthil Sowers and Patrick Watson.
Angela Stewart, Trish Fazzone, Deb Hanson, Judy Williams, Phyllis Horns and Georgia White won first place at Ladies Night Out at Ironwood last week. They scored a total of 31. Second went to the team of Belle Prusinowski, Debbie Pruitt, Cheryl Newbold, Jan Thornton and Leslie Bailey, who recorded a 32.
The annual Chris Carter Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Friday at Ayden Golf and Country Club. The event, over the years, has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to high school seniors headed to college.
The tournament, a four-person superball, has a fee of $125 per person.
Brook Valley Country Club held its Spring Season Opener last Sunday with a “Play with a Pirate Scramble.” Players from the East Carolina men's and women's teams were paired with BVCC members.
Each team played their own ball from the best tee shot and counted low gross and low net score.
First place was taken by Dale Pendry, Jeff Beaman, Cam Hardison and Attie Giles with a 119 score.
Second went to Jeff Gibson, Kirk Rogerson, Martin Anderson and Dorthea Forbrigd at 123. Third, also at 123 but losing a scorecard playoff, were Frank Lee, Charlene Lee, Steve Wilson and A.J. Beechler.
Frank Owens shot his age on Thursday, posting a 1-under-par 71 while playing from the white tees.
Brook Valley's Men's Golf Association played one of its favorites, Devil Ball, last week. Each team rotates hitting the devil ball and their score is added to the rest of the team's score. If the team finishes without losing their ball, they are awarded one stroke off their score.
First place went to Greg Hardison, Richard Wilson, Richard Winkler and Jeff Cargile. Second were Cline Hall, Kenny Smith, Rod Johnson and Weeks Worley, while Rob Burleson, Hunter Peyton, Martin Anderson and Beau Young took third. All three teams finished with 76s, but broke the ties with a scorecard playoff.
